Mermaids By Tres Buffalo.
He may have be on to something. Having spent more than a few days on the water, I know that you will see , and hear, things that you might not fully grasp. It could be a manatee breathing heavy in the dark water around you boat, or it could be breathless mermaids, tired from fighting the current and resting in the shallows. If you shine the spotlight, they are almost never there, and after the shock of the bright light fades, you can hear them again. So, does knowing something’s there and being unable to get absolute proof mean it doesn’t exist?

The question of the existence of Mermaids is one that has existed since men first went down to the sea in boats, and maybe even before that. The current suggestion is that this question, of existence, is best left to historians, philosophers, and anthropologists. No confirmed of aquatic humanoids has ever been found. Yet they occupy the collective conscious of seafarers, even today. That might be because we have forgotten how to dream of the unknown. Having stepped on the moon, we lost one of the largest collective dreams, and maybe all of the others went with it.

So, are Mermaids real? I would suggest that they are as real as anything else that can’t be found to not exist. You see, proving something doesn’t exist is probably the hardest thing in human reasoning. The Internet hasn’t helped matters either. If you believe anything, then there is a website, movement, or news story out there to support it. Yes, there’s even a flat earth society to reinforce anyone’s decision that the earth must surely be flat. A single flight in a modern airliner should easily dispel one’s belief that the world is flat and therefore the society would have no basis. But, there it is.

Do Mermaids exist in the desert? I don’t know about that, but if there’s water, there are likely Mermaids. They might be called by other names, such as pixies or nymphs, but they are around. There is no proof that they exist, but, more importantly, there is no proof that they don’t exist. Since we tend to want them to exist, they do. That is, until someone figures out how to definitely prove something doesn’t exist. That drifts quickly into religion, and probably to the resurrection of crusades, a short time later. Maybe it’s better to leave questions of religion to theologians. Otherwise they will become unemployed, and a burden to society. Back to Mermaids.

Mermaids have been around for so long that some societies classify Mermaids as goddesses. I think that we just want to believe in Mermaids. Perhaps, if we can find other lifeforms, possessing our level of intelligence, it would answer another question. One that the very first free-thinking person probably had. Are we alone in the universe? A Mermaid, Sasquatch, Yeti, or even a Jersey Devil, would be definitive proof of the plurality of life in the universe. I am certainly not sure what happens after that.

Fortunately, my friend, Lucky Cole, has found at least one Mermaid out in the Everglades. This only serves to reinforce the mysteries of the swamp, and the good fortune of those who chose to live there. Of course, if you do happen to find a Mermaid in your hot tub, it might be a good time to break out the single malt and enjoy a good cigar while she reads to you (Song of Her Soul is a great choice). After a while, you will probably find out just how nice it is to believe in Mermaids.

If you don’t know Lucky, you should come see us in Everglades City on the 18th of April at City Seafood (1:00 PM to 4:00 PM). He, and his beautiful wife Maureen, appear in my new book Blue Moon Raining.

Or, you can contact him and set up a photo session with Nature’s Exotic Beauty that might transform you. You will find Lucky on Loop Road, off the Tamiami Trial, deep in the heart of the Everglades.
